Tipping Guide for the US and Canada
Tipping culture in the United States and Canada can be confusing, especially with changing norms and the rise of digital payment prompts asking for tips everywhere. This guide breaks down what's customary so you can tip confidently.
Standard Tipping Rates
Restaurants (sit-down): 15-20% is standard in both the US and Canada. For exceptional service, 20-25% is appreciated. In Canada, note that tipping is calculated on the pre-tax amount, while in the US it's typically on the post-tax total. For counter service or takeout, 0-10% is optional but increasingly expected.
Bars: $1-2 per drink or 15-20% of the tab. Delivery drivers: 15-20% or a minimum of $3-5. Hair salons/barbers: 15-20%. Taxi/rideshare: 15-20%. Hotel housekeeping: $2-5 per night.
When You Don't Need to Tip
Fast food restaurants, self-serve buffets, and retail stores do not require tips. In Canada, some restaurants are moving toward "no-tipping" models with higher base prices. Always check if gratuity is already included for large parties (usually 18% auto-gratuity for groups of 6+).
Splitting Bills Fairly
When splitting bills, the simplest approach is to divide the total (including tip) equally among all diners. If orders vary significantly in price, some groups prefer to have each person pay for what they ordered plus their share of the tip. Our calculator above handles both scenarios — just enter the bill, choose your tip, and select how many people are splitting.
Pro tip: When dining in a group, round up slightly rather than down. The difference of a dollar or two per person adds up to a meaningful amount for your server.
