Understanding Your Paycheck: US and Canadian Tax Breakdown

If you've ever looked at your paycheck and wondered where all your money went, you're not alone. Between federal taxes, state/provincial taxes, and payroll deductions, your take-home pay can be significantly less than your gross salary. Understanding these deductions helps you plan your budget accurately.

US Tax Deductions

Federal Income Tax: The US uses a progressive tax system with seven brackets (10% to 37%). The standard deduction for 2024 is $14,600 for single filers and $29,200 for married filing jointly. This means your first $14,600 of income is effectively tax-free.

Social Security (FICA): 6.2% of your wages up to $168,600. Medicare: 1.45% of all wages, plus an additional 0.9% on income over $200,000. State Income Tax: Varies from 0% (Texas, Florida, Washington, Nevada, etc.) to 13.3% (California). Nine US states have no income tax at all.

Canadian Tax Deductions

Federal Income Tax: Canada also uses progressive brackets, ranging from 15% to 33%. Canada Pension Plan (CPP): 5.95% of pensionable earnings between $3,500 and $68,500. Employment Insurance (EI): Approximately 1.58% of insurable earnings. Provincial Tax: Varies by province, from 5.06% (British Columbia's lowest bracket) to 25.75% (Quebec's highest bracket).

Tips to Increase Your Take-Home Pay

Maximize pre-tax retirement contributions (401(k) in the US, RRSP in Canada) to lower your taxable income. Use Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) in the US. In Canada, maximize your TFSA for tax-free investment growth. Consider whether adjusting your W-4 (US) or TD1 (Canada) withholding makes sense for your situation.
